サンフランシスコ市議会で慰安婦像設置に関する公聴会が開かれた際、「従軍慰安婦は全て捏造だ。あの売春婦は嘘つきだ！」と元慰安婦の女性を攻撃した日本人参加者へ
カンポス市議は「恥を知れ（Shame on you）」と四度繰り返した。
この騒動の後、同市議会は全会一致で慰安婦像の設置を決定した。
