NORMAL — Jo Young-Ju and Ha Joo-Young are doing more than riding their bicycles more than 3,700 miles across the United States.
The two college students from Seoul, South Korea, are raising awareness about “comfort women” who were forced into military-run brothels by the Japanese military before and during World War II.
An estimated 50,000 to 200,000 women, mostly Koreans, were forced to become “comfort women.”
The matter continues to be an issue between South Korea and Japan despite a 2015 agreement between the two countries in which Japan provided $1 billion yen — about $8.7 million — to a fund for the victims. But supporters of the women said the agreement did not go far enough.
Jo and Ha are part of something called the Triple A Project, which stands for “Admit. Apologize. Accompany,” said Ha.
“It was an infringement of human rights,” said Ha. “We need an official apology and recompense for the victims.”がんばれ!
